This is a beautiful long weekend for all horse racing enthusiasts in Malta. Starting off with today's SETTE GIUGNIO Cup Final and ending up with Sunday's barrage of 5 Finals reserved for French Trotters.

With around 60 of the best horses in different classes racing to glory, this weekend will surely be one full of exciting racing and emotions amongst all the people involved with the participating horses.

We would like to wish all participants in the finals the best of luck and take the opportunity to invite all racing enthusiasts to the track.

The meeting of Friday 7th June will start at 16:30 whilst that on Sunday 9th June will start at 13:30.

During the past 2 weeks we had the Qualifiers for the SECF sponsored Championship for French trotters in Malta.



Tomorrow on the occasion of the 22nd Meeting of the year, this championship enters into a new phase; the Semi-Finals. Things are now getting serious and at this stage we will be getting the finalists for the 5 finals of this Championship reserved to each of the classes of horses running in Malta.

The Premier Class horses not participating in the SECF Championship will also be having Qualifiers running parallel to this championship. The 3 Qualifiers to be held next Sunday will give the first 3 horses of each of these qualifiers a ticket for the Sette Giugnio Cup which Final will be held on the 7th June as the name itself suggests.

Whilst wishing all the participants the best of luck for a place in the finals, we would like to invite the public to be numerous at the track for yet another interesting meeting.

It stands clear of any doubt that the Tazza l-Kbira (the Big cup) is the most prestigious cup in the Maltese Trotting calendar. Since it's start back in 1934 won by Frise Poulet this cup has had a tumultuous history but none the less always a prestigious one.

This year's Tazza l-Kbira too promises to be a great race with some of the best horses in the country fighting it out on D Day.

This year's Tazza l-Kbira was announced this week with a press conference by the Malta Racing Club. Here are the details issued during the Press Release:

This Year’s “Tazza l-Kbira – Dragonara Casino Brasserie” horse racing event starts on Friday

Dr. Matthew Brincat, Malta Racing Club Chairman, announced today the launch of Malta’s most prestigious trotting trophy, It-Tazza l-Kbira. The prized Cup, It-Tazza l-Kbira, will be awarded to the winner of the championship Final, to be held on Sunday 7th April.

The early qualifying heats, featuring the top 72 trotters (61 from the Premier class and 11 from the Gold class) will be held this Friday. The race distance is as usual 2,640m and the first four horses from each of the six heats will qualify for the semi finals. The 24 semi-finalists will run again on Sunday 24th March. The first race on Friday 8th March starts at 18:30.

During the press conference held at the MRC Tote Shop, MRC Chairman Dr Matthew Brincat said, “It-Tazza l-Kbira, is the most prestigious Trotting Racing Trophy in Malta. This award dates back to 1934 and has built a reputation that all horse racing enthusiasts consider as the main annual event in this sport. The Trophy has been won over the years by some of the best horses ever to race on the island, has seen controversy on a number of occasions and has survived for nearly 80 years."

Dr Brincat continued “ this year’s participants come from no less than seven different countries, 42 French participants, 22 Swedes, 3 Germans, 2 originating in the US and one each from Denmark , Finland and the Netherlands. The youngest participant is Swede Opal Hall (6 years), whilst the oldest is French 2011 Tazza l-Kbira winner Kakisis, also the winner of the December VOB grand final held last year.”

The winner of this year’s It-Tazza l-Kbira Dragonara Casino Brasserie Final will be awarded the trophy for a year plus €2,600. The total prize money for the Final is €4,480, consisting of the first prize, €1,000 for the runner- up; €450 for the third place; €250 for the fourth place and €180 for the fifth placed. A trophy will also be awarded in respect of each of the first five placed horses. All finalists will be awarded a personalised number, horse blanket (ghata) with the winner of It-Tazza l-Kbira receiving a special horse blanket.

Dr. Brincat added “undoubtedly all the participants are quality horses and we wish the best of luck to all of them.”

The 2013 Tazza l-Kbira edition will be sponsored for the 2nd consecutive year by The Dragonara Casino Brasserie.

Tonight the 2nd edition of the Malta Horse Racing Awards will be held at the Dolmen Hotel in Qawra. These awards are being co-hosted by the Malta Racing Club and Kunsill Malti ghall-iSport.

During this event 19 prizes amongst awards and recognition prizes will be awarded. These Awards will awarded for the best performers of the year 2012 along with some live time achievement awards.

The event will be presented by renowned TVM presenter Sergio Mallia and will be filmed by TVM2 so that it can be aired later during the week. The awards ceremony shall be starting at 8:30pm

It was the 5th February 2008 when we went online for the first time, and 5 years down the line we are still here struggling to keep it together. We are extremely busier than we were 5 years ago but we are happy to be your major reference when it comes to horse racing in Malta and strive to continue giving you all this service.

This is also the year of more and more investments, starting off by our photographic equipment and we will go on by improving our website with a new website design which has been entrusted to a professional designer.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank all those people who supported us and who encourage us to continue in our efforts. You are all much appreciated. Appreciations also goes to all those that give their constructive feedback on which we try to improve our product. It is not always easy but rest assured we do our best.

A special thanks goes to some of our best friends that help us with the information gathering and through their help with cross checking all the information and statistics we hold. With the help of these friends we ensure good quality information.

It is surely time to celebrate, but more over, time to work harder. After all it is like with racing horses; You win, you celebrate, but the day after your are back at the track training for the next challenge.
